Intensive Labor to Aid Community Around Tebelian Airport

The presence of Tebelian Airport in Sintang, West Kalimantan, has a strategic impact on the surrounding area. Five districts, namely Sintang, Melawi, Sekadau, Sanggau, and Kapuas Hulu, are served by flights in and out the airport.

In addition, the airport also provides work for people who are still unemployed, underemployed, and poor families, through labor-intensive programs. The implementation of this program on Monday (2/18/2019) was also reviewed by Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi along with Director General of Air Transportation, Polana B. Pramesti, and Regent Sintang Jarot Winarno, along with other officials.

Regarding Tebelian Airport, Budi said that the Government is building connectivity, including through Sintang. “Sintang as one of the main areas in Central-West Kalimantan is easy to reach with the Tebelian Airport which has been completed and operated,” he said.

Budi added, “We are not only building connectivity in Java, but throughout Indonesia with the aim of uniting the NKRI. This airport unites it through the air. ”

Jarot fully supports the construction and operation of Tebelian Airport. He explained that land modes were still operating to meet inter-regional connectivity. “From here it can reach Nanga Pinoh and Pontianak,” he said, explaining the road access from the airport gate.

Meanwhile, Polana explained that the Tebelian Airport labor intensive program was carried out with a budget of Rp 68.1 million. It can absorb 141 worker, especially residents of the community around the airport.

“Labor intensive programs are expected to be able to provide benefits to the community and be able to increase the productivity, income, and purchasing power of rural communities. Besides that, it can also strengthen a sense of togetherness and mutual cooperation, “said Polana.

On the same occasion, Head of UPBU (Airport Organizing Unit) Director of Directorate General of Air Transportation Patah Atabri revealed that the labor intensive at Tebelian Airport was the first time to carry out. The types of work include construction and building maintenance, also clear up the access road to the airport.

Tebelian Airport, which is 15 kilometers from the city, is in the grant area of the Sintang District Government with an area of 144.07 hectares. The terminal has an area of 2,000 square meters with a runway of 1,820 x 30 meters, a taxiway of 160 x 18 meters, and an apron of 220 x 60 meters. Previously Sintang had Susilo Airport, which was located in the middle of the city, and now the area is returned to the Sintang District Government.

Dozens of hectares of lands in numbers of regencies has been released for the expansion of Tebelian Airport, even though it has not yet been granted to be managed by UPBU. As well as with the area from the airport fence to the gate covering an area of about 9 hectares which still belongs to the Sintang District Government. Likewise with about 18 hectares on the airport side, which will be allocated for the extension of the runway and the construction of the cargo terminal.

Patah said that every day there are two regular flights from Supadio Airport, Pontianak, to Tebelian. Both flights are operated by Wings Air and NAM Air with ATR 72-600 aircraft. Previously NAM Air flew twice a day. Even then, there was also Garuda Indonesia flights.

“Garuda stopped operations first because as reported the ATR aircraft would be operated by Citilink,” said Patah, who hopes that in the future when the runway is extended and can be loaded with Boeing 737-800NG jets, the flights will increase along with the growth of passengers and air cargo.
